Fundraising Car Wash Raises £300 in aid of Skcin

10 June 2012

Fundraising car wash raises £300 in aid of Skcin thanks to George and William Barker and friends, they write about their day of fundrasing for Skcin below...

George Spencer Academy in Stapleford, set their year 8 students a challenge to independently raise funds for any charity of their choice.

My twin brother and I live in Toton and decided a car wash on a Saturday morning would be a good idea, and had recently heard about Skcin from a family friend after my Mum had a BCC (Basal Cell Carcinoma) removed in May. We decided that if we could persuade Mum to serve coffee, tea and cakes whilst customers waited, and get Dad to help with the bigger cars, even more money could be raised!

Fortunately we have great friends who also wanted to help out. Brad and Matt had already fund raised at school but were very keen to get involved and as it turned out we could not have managed without them!

We asked friends, family and neighbours to support us and bought new sponges and buckets hoping we would get some customers brave enough to let 13 year old boys loose on their cars!

Anthony Hubbard, Skcin’s Technical Director provided banners, leaflets, and hats and was official photographer for the day.

At 9.30am our first car arrived and we worked until 3.30pm washing 32 cars and serving numerous cups of tea and coffee. The support we received was amazing and we were delighted to meet Richard Clifford, who chatted to friends and family whilst keeping one eye on his car as we washed it!

Thanks go to everyone who supported us, our school friends Sam, Joe, Lucy, Jakob, Alistair, Mum and Dad for helping and to Anthony for his enthusiasm and encouragement during the day.

We are delighted to be able to send a cheque for £300 to Skcin and hopefully have raised awareness of sun safety and the early detection of skin cancer in the process.
