Sunbed Facts
Sunbeds are not safe 'FACT' Research has proved that Ultra Violet used in sunbeds (UVA) can cause all types of skin cancer. In the early 80's sunbeds that only gave off UVA were being developed, it is the UVa that causes the skin to burn, so when manufacturers claim theirs is safe - they're wrong. We are starting to see that sunbed use is a definitive risk factor for melanoma.
Research has shown a small but significant increase of risk for those who have ever used a sunbed and a higher risk for those who have used sunbeds more often, for longer periods of time, or at a younger age.
The results of an Australian study has shown that sunbed users before the age of 20 had more than doubled their chance of developing skin cancer compared with those who hadn't. Alarmingly those who have used a sunbed at this early age now have a 70% increased risk of developing this potentially fatal disease. A common misconception is that a sunbed tan will prepare or protect your skin before you go on holiday - It won't, there is no such thing as a safe tan!
