The easiest, hassle-free way of raising funds is to create an online fundraising page with JustGiving. It takes just a few minutes and after a few quick steps you will be able to share your story on email and social media and will be able to start receiving donations.

There are some key things that you will want to think about before you begin such as the amount you want to raise, and if will you be raising money as part of an organised event or an event you are organising yourself.

You can also easily create a team event – this means you and your friends can each have your own Fundraising Page, but join them together to contribute to an overall total. Whether it’s a shared effort, or you want to introduce some friendly competition between team members, it’s never been easier to fundraise together.

If you plan to hold any type of public event it is important to ensure you have the necessary licences and insurance in place. The smartest way to ensure you are compliant and have all bases covered is to contact your local authority with details of your event so they can advise and assist you in ensuring your event is safe and legal. Here are some considerations to bare in mind when planning your event:

INSURANCE: If you are organising a public event you must ensure that Public Liability Insurance cover is in place. If you are holding your event in a venue, check with them first as they may already have this in place.

ALCOHOL: You need a license for an event if you are selling alcohol (or if alcohol is included in the ticket price). There are two main types of licenses – a Premises License or a Temporary Event License (TEN). Contact your local authority for advice.

FOOD: If you plan to serve food at your event it must be handled hygienically and must comply with the Food safety act 1990. For further details contact your local authority’s environmental health department.

ENTERTAINMENT: If you plan to have some form of entertainment (two or more people performing or dancing) in a building, which does not already hold a Public Entertainments Licence, you need to get one by contacting your local authority.

EVENT RAFFLES: Anything held over more than 1 day or across several locations will need a licence from your local authority licence department there should be no cash prizes.

DONATIONS: Donations should always be made freely and willingly. Never pester, harass or force people into making a donation. If you plan to approach people with a collection bucket or collect money by going door to door, bare in mind you would need to obtain a specific licence from your local authority.

DATA PROTECTION: Do not record people’s personal details other than for the use of the event. If details are to be passed on to SKCIN you must follow GDPR (General Data Protection Regulations) guidelines by making this clear at the point of collection and have permission.

PARENTAL PERMISSION: If children are helping at your event or you plan to take photos that may be used publicly following the event, ensure you get parental permission.

FIRST AID: If you are holding an event ensure there is easy access to a first aid kit. For larger events consider having a qualified first aider on hand (Check with you local authority if you need guidance).

ONLINE DONATIONS

The easiest, most efficient way of collecting sponsorships and donations is to encourage people to give online via JustGiving. You can set up your own fundraising page in support of Skcin here: https://www.justgiving.com/skcin
The platform takes care of Gift Aid declarations and any funds raised are transferred on a weekly basis to Skcin.

CHEQUE DONATIONS

If you are fundraising offline, encourage your donors to give by cheques or Charity Aid Foundation (CAF) vouchers made payable to SKCIN.
Encourage donors to complete a single donation Gift Aid form, which will add and extra 25p to every pound they donate.

If you have cheques made payable to you, please deposit these into your bank and forward a personal cheque to us with a completed donation form.

CASH DONATIONS

Please avoid sending cash to us by post. If you collect cash, please deposit it into your bank account and either send us a cheque (with a completed donation form), add the amount to your JustGiving page, or contact Skcin for our bank details.

If you choose to pay the amount into JustGiving and are a UK taxpayer, please make sure that you un-tick the Gift Aid box. Gift Aid should only be claimed when an eligible donor is making their own donation, not on behalf of someone else or a group.
