WHAT IS THE UV INDEX?

The UV Index is an international standard measurement, of the strength of sunburn-producing solar UV radiation at the earth’s surface. It tells us how strong the UV is at a particular place and time.

The level of risk of burning is categorised by five, number and colour coded values. The higher the number, the stronger the UV and the less time it takes for sun damage to occur.

A UV Index of 1 or 2 is generally considered safe, but when levels reach 3, steps should be taken to protect the skin and eyes from the damaging effects of UV radiation – for information go to: Skin Cancer Prevention

The UV Index typically rises throughout spring and into summer, but does not exceed 8 in the UK. A UV Index of 8 is rare, but it can sometimes reach 7 in peak summer. Indices of 9 and 10 are common in the Mediterranean area, so take extra care when travelling abroad to warmer climates.
